Small Business Saturday

Small Business Saturday is the day created to celebrate the Shop Small Movement to drive shoppers to local merchants across the United States. Studies have shown that modest changes in consumer spending habits can generate substantial local economic impact. For every $100 in customer spending at a national chain, the total local economic impact is only $13. The same amount spent with a local merchant yields $45, more than three times the local economic impact. This year’s Small Business Saturday is on November 28th .

There are a couple of ways to get involved and be part of the these efforts:

  • Local businesses can generate excitement by creating
a special event at their location.  Merchants can attract new customers on this day by promoting this event on social media platforms and list the occasion on web sites that audiences turn to for local activities like Eventbrite.
  • Visit and shop at a local business. Be a part of Small Business Saturday 2015 and help our communities grow and prosper.

National collaborative efforts from Shop Small Movement create stronger bond between local businesses and the community; while aiming to reverse the trend of losing locally owned independent businesses. Be part of the movement.

Freelancers Union and Spark Austin

Freelancers Union is a national membership organization of over 200,000 members of independent workers, including temporary, part-time, freelance, and self-employed workers. The group is a new kind of union that doesn’t charge dues. Instead of collective bargaining, Freelancers Union uses the power of the group to build market power and political power. Together, members create a new social safety net that works.

The Freelancers Union community flourishes because of the thoughtful and respectful communication of its members who contribute valid, useful content.  The mission of the group is to promote the interests of independent workers through advocacy, education, and service for the changing workforce to make freelance fair.

Spark Austin is a program under Freelancers Union with monthly face to face meetings that serves as resource for freelancers to meet each other and discuss a specific topic.  As an entrepreneur who’s built a strong brand for several entities and has strategized with her clients to increase their online presence, Monica Peña, founder of MUNDU Media and North Austin Influencers will lead discussion on How to Build an Inspired Business on November 4th. Freelancers will reflect on their business goals, and if/how those goals align with their personal beliefs and their beliefs about what’s best for their clients.

North Austin Influencers’ Meetup

By: Monica Peña   (@MUNDUmedia)

Meetup is an online site that facilitates offline group meetings in various localities around the world. The web site allows members to find and join groups unified by common interest, such as books, gender, health, pets, careers or hobbies. Users enter their ZIP code or their city and the topic they want to meet about, and the website helps navigate them to the correct group to join.

I recently decided to create, a Meetup group, North Austin Influencers so that members can exchange ideas, learn through educational workshops, and use their expertise in different fields to enhance leadership skills while discovering my area of town. This group is for individuals to continue learning in their profession or passions through connection building, self-improvement, using strategies for success, and experience sharing.

This group will offer individuals an opportunity to enhance their leadership skills by building relationships with like-minded individuals through:

• once a month mixers in North Austin (including Pflugerville & Round Rock)

• development workshops and/or series

• information on other leadership opportunities in the area

Our mission is to bring people together to exchange ideas, learn through educational workshops and mixers using the expertise of top industry professionals while providing marketing opportunities to businesses who host Meet-ups.

The first monthly Networking Mixer is on July 18th at Casa Chapala on Anderson Ln.  COST: $10 prepaid or $15 at the door which includes Nacho bar and Tequila Trivia.  Meet business professionals and executives, business owners and entrepreneurs from a diverse group of industries.  The event hashtag is #Influencers

We look forward to seeing you at Casa Chapala, Home to Austin Tequila Society, a community of tequila aficionados and lovers-of-agave who gather to enjoy tequila in its many forms. The Society’s mission is to promote the enjoyment of tequila as a sophisticated sipping spirit, as well as a delicious base to traditional cocktails (Margarita, Mexican Martini, etc.).

Locally produced Spicy Mama Salsa, the salsa that “gives back”, made with fresh fire roasted chilies, all natural ingredients, gluten free, and fat free will be available for tasting and purchase. 30% percent of profit goes right back into the Austin Community to help EDUCATE, EMPOWER & SERVE the inner city community work through LaunchPad’s youth programs.
