Breakthrough Central Texas creates a path to and through college for students who will become the first in their families to earn a college degree. At the core of their model for academic success and personal success are three main pillars. Each pillar provides students skills and experiences that address the three critical factors that limit academic success and persistence: unequal out-of-school academic opportunities, the lack of a knowledgeable personal advocate and the development of non-cognitive skills. The model fills these gaps, leveling the education playing field.
Breakthrough’s proven model continues to produce more and more graduates as they expand their partner network across the region with school districts, colleges, universities and employers. At the foundation of the model, there is a driving motivation and achievement in the minds of the students they serve as they pursue their college education – growth mindset. When the students believe they can achieve something, they understand that effort makes them stronger; therefore putting in that extra effort and time leading to higher achievement.
In August, Breakthrough Internship Network (BIN) students wrapped up an exciting summer of professional development and work experience. At the end of the summer, the program asked them to participate in the Presentations of Learning event, which gives students an opportunity to reflect upon their internship experience, hone their presentation and communication skills, and receive meaningful feedback from caring adults and professionals. I was fortuante to meet some of the youth in this program and hear their stories.
Tonight, the students heard how to to get LinkedIn for Successful Results. It was a tremendous honor to participate in the interaction with the students and be able to present the information while hearing their goals. I appreciate the invitation.
